azbukivediThe starting point is in winter wonderland. As in slow motion, I pass through the white lace of snow-covered trees, absorbing the breathtaking beauty of my surroundings, indulging in solitude, interrupted only by a flock of fluttering black triangles in the sky, flying somewhere warm and green, but doubtfully as pristine. It’s cold, hazy and eerily quiet in the post-snow storm morning, and I glide through this exquisite splendor, window open despite frosty weather, skin needled by cold, eyes watery from the frigid air, yet unable to force myself back into the warm stuffy air of the car.
Before I know it, the roads become cleaner and wider, other drivers interrupt my solitude, the snow takes a brownish tint from the flying dirt, and even birds veer from the course, swerve westward and disappear form the view. The transition is slow, whiteness doesn’t turn into brownness in a split second, rather, it first loses its luster, then becomes off-white as the number of cars and houses around me steadily increases, and finally brownness takes over the scenery, winning its urban battle with nature. The city greets us with noise and crowdedness, as if preparing me for the mundane chores of the day. My brief encounter with nature, almost powerful enough to challenge the lifelong devout agnosticism, is over. Material world welcomes you, baby.
I am grateful for this hour-long drive, it takes me from morning into the day, it allows for meditation and unhurried absorption of the surroundings, it calms the nerves and reduces stress, but today, more than anything, it illustrates the human interaction with and influence on the environment, as I move from the starting point of winter wonderland and cross the finishing line in the big, loud city. The city I love and couldn’t live without.
